Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a kind of refractive error, not an eye disease. It happens when the eye or the cornea is shaped irregularly. This causes blurred vision for both distance and close-up. It’s a common eye condition that’s treatable with corrective action.

Understanding Astigmatism: Blurred Vision Explained

Astigmatism happens when either the front surface of the eye (cornea) or the lens inside the eye has mismatched curves. This changes the way light passes or refracts light to your retina, which causes blurry, fuzzy, or distorted vision.

This eye condition often occurs along with nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). Symptoms of this eye condition include squinting, blurred vision, eye strain, and headache. If left untreated, it can lead to various vision problems. In worst cases, it can even contribute to amblyopia or lazy eye.

What Causes Astigmatism

Astigmatism can be genetic, often present at birth. It can also develop after an eye injury or surgery. People with keratoconus have a higher risk of astigmatism. Keratoconus is a rare eye disease. In this condition, the cornea gets thinner and takes on a cone shape.

Many people believe that this eye condition comes from reading in bad light or sitting too close to the TV. However, this is not true.
