Cataracts

A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area on the otherwise clear lens of the eye. This eye condition is one of the leading causes of vision loss.

What Are Cataracts

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye, which leads to blurry vision. People who have this eye condition often suffer from a clouded, hazy, or less colorful vision. Early signs of this eye condition can be hard to tell because it slowly develops over time.

The cataract forms in the lens, which is located behind the iris, the colored part of the eye. Normally, the lens focuses light on the retina, producing a clear image. When a cataract clouds this lens, it scatters light, preventing the lens from focusing properly. This results in various vision problems.

What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Cataracts

Most cataracts develop due to age-related changes in the eyes. However, certain factors can contribute to their development, including:

  • • Diabetes: High blood sugar in people with diabetes can lead to a buildup of glucose in the lens. This can also make the lens cloudy.
  • • Medications: Long-term use of medications such as corticosteroids can cause cataracts to form.
  • • Smoking: People who smoke cigarettes are 2-3 times more likely to develop cataracts compared to people who don’t smoke.
  • • Alcohol: Excessive alcohol intake may also contribute to cataract formation.
  • • UV Rays: High exposure to UV rays damages the natural proteins in the eye’s lens.
  • • Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to cataracts and may experience cataracts earlier.

Cataract develops slowly as you age. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • • Clouded or blurry vision
  • • Increased sensitivity to light
  • • Reduced intensity of colors
  • • Difficulty seeing at night
  • • Double vision in a single eye
  • • Frequent changes of eyeglass prescription

Managing Cataracts: Diagnosis and Treatment Options

To find out if you have a cataract, your eye doctor will check your medical history and symptoms. They will also do a complete eye exam.

With our EyeCare360, we'll perform a visual acuity test, a refraction test, and an eye structure test. We will look at both the inside and outside of your eyes for any signs of problems. This includes checking for the possible development of a cataract.

Cataract treatment varies on a case-by-case basis. This depends on the visual impairment that this eye condition may cause in your daily life.

If it minimally affects your vision, a doctor may recommend prescription glasses. These can help correct blurry or hazy vision. Additionally, the anti-glare coatings in glasses can help reduce glare and a patient's sensitivity to light.

If it has gotten worse and affects your daily life, your eye doctor may recommend cataract surgery. This involves removing the clouded lens of the eye and replacing it with a clear, artificial lens.
